Video lesson: LIVE Infection Control Class: Salon Sanitation, Disinfection & Safety Standards — Mary Negron School of Nails. Embedded from the original YouTube channel.
Hygiene is a professional skill, not an optional finishing step. This course gives a general framework; always follow local public-health rules, workplace policy and the exact instructions for disinfectants and equipment.
Learning outcomes
- Explain cleaning, disinfection and sterilisation as different processes.
- Set up clean and used-tool zones.
- Choose single-use items appropriately.
- Prevent cross-contamination during services.
- Know when to stop a service and follow incident procedures.
1. The three processes
Cleaning removes visible soil and organic material. Disinfection uses an appropriate product and contact time to reduce many harmful microorganisms on suitable surfaces or tools. Sterilisation is a validated process intended to destroy all forms of microbial life on items that require it. These terms are not interchangeable. Follow local requirements for which tools need which process.
2. Hand and workstation hygiene
Wash hands before and after every client, after glove removal and whenever contamination is suspected. Gloves do not replace hand hygiene. Clean work surfaces between clients, then disinfect with a product suitable for the surface and follow the full wet contact time on the label. Keep food and drinks away from service areas.
3. Tool handling
Separate clean, disinfected and used tools in clearly marked containers. Remove visible debris before disinfection where required. Follow dilution, contact-time and compatibility instructions exactly. Never mix chemicals. Store processed tools in a clean, dry, protected area. Dispose of sharps in an approved sharps container; never recap or leave them loose.
4. Single-use items and product handling
Use fresh disposable applicators, files or buffers when required and discard them after one client. Do not double-dip applicators into shared product. Decant product with a clean spatula where appropriate. Check expiry dates and keep containers closed and labelled.
5. Stop-service criteria
Do not work over open wounds, active infection signs, unexplained swelling or severe irritation. If a client experiences unexpected pain, burning or a reaction, stop the service, remove products safely where appropriate and follow workplace incident procedures. Seek medical assistance for serious symptoms. Document incidents factually and protect privacy.
Practice assignment
- Draw a one-way workflow from used tools to cleaned, disinfected and stored tools.
- Read a disinfectant label and record its contact time.
- Create a checklist for hand hygiene and workstation reset.
- Write three service-stop scenarios and the correct response.
Knowledge check
Does wearing gloves replace handwashing? No. Can cleaning and disinfection be treated as identical? No. Should disinfectant contact time be guessed? Never.
