This course teaches beauty learners how to discuss cosmetic skin care responsibly. It is not diagnosis, treatment or medical advice. Skin conditions require assessment by an appropriately qualified health professional.

Learning outcomes

  • Distinguish cosmetic skin observations from medical diagnosis.
  • Describe common skin-feel patterns without labelling disease.
  • Build a simple routine in a sensible order.
  • Read product labels and introduce new products cautiously.
  • Recognise when to pause a service and refer.

Lesson 1 — Observe, do not diagnose

Clients may describe skin as oily, dry, combination, sensitive or balanced. These are practical descriptions, not diagnoses. Observe visible shine, dryness or product preference only with consent. Lighting, weather, medication and routine can affect appearance. Avoid promising to cure acne, eczema, rosacea, pigmentation or other conditions.

Lesson 2 — The skin barrier in simple terms

The outer skin layer helps reduce water loss and provides a protective interface with the environment. Over-cleansing, harsh scrubbing and excessive use of strong actives may increase discomfort for some people. A conservative routine is often easier to maintain: gentle cleansing, moisturising and daytime sun protection.

Lesson 3 — Understand the routine order

  1. Cleanse: use a gentle cleanser suited to the person’s comfort and routine.
  2. Treat: optional cosmetic products should be chosen according to label directions and introduced one at a time.
  3. Moisturise: support comfort with a suitable moisturiser.
  4. Protect: use broad-spectrum sunscreen according to its label during daytime exposure.

More products do not automatically mean better results. Avoid combining multiple strong exfoliating or active products without appropriate professional guidance.

Lesson 4 — Ingredient and label literacy

Read the full ingredient list, directions, warnings, expiry and storage instructions. Patch testing can help some users notice irritation, but it cannot guarantee that a product will never cause a reaction. Stop use if significant irritation occurs and seek medical advice for severe or persistent symptoms. Do not recommend prescription treatments or diagnose a skin condition.

Lesson 5 — Professional boundaries

Pause a cosmetic service if the client reports pain, sudden swelling, open wounds, infection signs or a severe reaction. Encourage prompt assessment by a qualified clinician. Keep client notes private and obtain consent before recording or sharing photographs.

Practice activity

Create a simple morning and evening routine using no more than three or four steps. Explain the purpose of each step in plain language and identify two situations where you would refer rather than advise.

Knowledge check

What is the professional role? Provide cosmetic education and safe service practices, not medical diagnosis. What should you do after a severe reaction? Stop the service and direct the client to appropriate medical care.
